When talking about sound masking, cover is the term given to a computer generated random sound that makes conversation and noise more difficult to hear and comprehend. The sound has no information within it, which ensures the human ear and brain cannot recognise it and therefore we are not distracted by it.

This masking sound is controlled in volume and frequency to fit the profile of the space it is being used in and creates an ambient background sound level. This reduces the gap between the high and low sound pressures which results in a sound dynamic, measured in decibels (dB(A)). The smaller the sound emergence the less the occupant is interrupted or overheard. Sound masking technology provided by Logison® Acoustic Network offers industry leading performance.

Sound masking as natural occurrence

Sound masking may sound technologically advanced, but it is a phenomenon common in nature. For example, the breaking waves on a beach generate a natural random sound spectrum that masks intelligible components of speech and inhibits comprehension, making it easy to have a private talk on the beach without being disturbed by other peoples' conversations.
